Green Schools
Let's make Powerstown Educate Together a Green school!
What is Green-Schools?
Green-Schools, known internationally as Eco-Schools, is an international environmental education
programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment.
The aim of Green-Schools is to increase students’ and participant awareness of environmental issues through classroom studies and to transfer this knowledge into positive environmental action in the school and also in the wider community. Schools that have successfully completed all the elements of the programme are awarded the ‘Green Flag’.
This award has now become a well-recognised Eco-Label.Most young people care deeply about environmental issues, and wish to make a positive change in the environment around them. The Green School Programme provides an ideal way for fostering environmental awareness in the entire school and aims to make it an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of the school.
Our Junior Infants class are going to work really hard to try and get our first green flag!
Part of our Green School Programme in Powerstown Educate Together is to make the children responsible for taking care of their environment i.e. classroom, yard and field. To do this, we have set up a Green School Committee with children from the class taking part. Every child will get a chance to be on this 'Green Team' to ensure that they all experience what is is like to take resposibility for their class and surroundings.
In doing this, the Green School Committee have an anti-litter action plan which incorporates reducing, re-using and recycling waste. In order to minimize waste in the school we would encourage the children to:
1. Use a lunchbox with a lid. Try to avoid clingfilm and aluminium foil.
2. Re-use plastic bottles for drinks.
3. Use reusable bags. Say ”NO” to plastic bags.
4. Use both sides of a sheet of paper and use paper from the scrap paper tray for pictures.
5. Use the compost bin for vegetable and fruit peelings. This is then empties twice a week
by members on the Green Team to the main compost bin in the school garden.
Over the next few weeks we are going to start planting bulbs and vegetables in our school garden. We will use old containers to collect rainwater when the plants need to be watered and make birdfeeders for all the small birds during the cold winter months.
